The History of The Gopher Gang
Hell's Kitchen New York
Hell's Kitchen New York
Michael Brennan, 17 and clever beyond his years, navigates the chaos of Manhattan's underbelly, the smog and bustle of 1904 Manhattan. The Gophers got their name by hiding in Bowery cellars and made their money robbing freights of alcohol.
The Gophers were formed at the turn of the 20th century by Michael. They were almost entirely Irish and British immigrants and their home base was in lower Manhattan. Included in their ranks were one hundred and fifty women, the Lady Gophers.
The Gopher Gang ruled the streets from Fourth to Forty-Second Street and Seventh to Eleventh Avenue. Their businesses included Battle Row Saloon, a pool hall run from the basement, and Hells Kitchen Dance Hall. Society girl Ida Burger worked the dance hall in secret.
"If the world's covered in gasoline, he's lighting a match"
A lone wolf, orphaned, and content with his solitude, he's the youngest gang leader of his time. He is taking the crown of crime boss of the Bowery and breaking all the rules. Perhaps the biggest he'll break is falling for the Dance Hall girl with a secret. A girl who's father he knows all too well for all the wrong reasons.
"A bird in a gilded cage"
Sweet, intelligent, and attractive, Ida is everything a young lady ought to be, but she feels trapped. She is 16 going on 17 and innocent as a rose. A debutante by day, she is sneaking off to a Dance hall by night to absolve her brothers debt. She finds herself entangled in the world of the Irish Mafia.
"I am woman"
Known as the "most feared brick hurler of her time", she is renowned for her fierceness in battle and her strength of character. A figure of great respect, she acts as a mother and a warrior. She's the leader of the Lady Gophers and part of Micheal's council of cutthroats.
"What's in a name?"
Just come over from Britain and only 14 years old, Killer is already absorbed in Manhattan's underworld. Newly initiated into the Gophers he is desperate to prove himself to Michael, going so far as to rack up at least 5 documented murders before he turns 16. Owen Vincent Madden has to make a name for himself, and "Killer" just might be it.
"Don't judge a book by its cover"
Biff, a gentle giant, was more business than brutality, despite his larger than life appearance. He was well known for owning dance and pool halls, even one all-male, gay dance hall. Moving up in the world, he, later, joins the Five Points Gang at the behest of his lover, Pat "Razor" Riley, but they were banished due to an unsuccessful takeover.
"Some men prefer the shadows"
The salty best friend of Michael Brennan, they grew up like brothers. Now they fight together under the Gopher name, and he is content living in Michael's shadow. Hot tempered, he'll start fights that Michael has to finish. The worst of them landed both boys in prison, even though New Boy tried to take the blame for it all.
"Big boss Murphy doesn't quit"
Charles Murphy has played nice all of his life, making the right choices. He has now married a woman of means and he's on his way to the top. Oh, he's close to the goal, but with one last obstacle: Boss Croker, current leader of Tammany Hall. Michael Brennan might just be the tool to get Murphy that crown, but the Gopher may take a prized jewel when he steals Ida.
"If you're looking for my knife, it's in your back."
Knox, like New Boy, lives in Michael's shadow. A second in command, but he isn't content with that. He befriends Michael's protege, "Killer" Madden, and uses the boy to betray Michael and the Gophers. He launches a takeover with the help of the Hudson Dusters, but his failure will force him to stay and lick his wounds with the Dusters instead.
"The pinnacle of society isn't easy to achieve."
Oliver, a banker, marries Alva Vanderbilt, a fiercely rich and independent woman and soldier of women rights, her social rivalry with Caroline Astor is legendary in New York society. August, a widower, becomes a financier who constructs the first subway with the assistance of Tammany Hall. Both brothers share a fate, intertwined with the Gophers.
"Looks can be misleading"
Happy Jack, isn't a very Happy fellow. In fact he has a quick temper and a sensitive soul. He wanted to be a professional fighter and he'll brawl at the drop of a hat, and win, which is why the Gophers took him in. A birth defect has fixed his face in a semi-permanent grin, and if anyone says anything about it, it might be the last thing they ever do.
"Who's afraid of these big bad boys?"
The Five Points gang was an Italian and Irish street gang, led by Paulo Vicarelli, or Paul Kelley. They presided over both Harlem and Brooklyn, and were involved in everything from election fraud to prostitution and gambling. But there's a thorn in their side: The Eastman Gang. Their feud was tempestuous, and lasted for years.
"Always the bridesmaid"
The Eastman Gang was a predominantly Jewish street gang, located on the Lower east side. They dabbled in all sorts of rackets, Eventually betrayed by Tammany Hall, their leader, Monk Eastman, went to prison after a high stakes boxing match with Paul Kelley, of the Five Points gang. That left the them leaderless, and split into a civil war.
"Maybe we're crazy, maybe we're high, probably both."
As compared to the Gophers, the Dusters were equal in size, equal in strength and equal in political influence. Their weakness and their strength lies in the "dust" that they both used and sold. Drug crazed , violent benders were both their calling card and their undoing.
"The terrifying weaker sex"
Disguising themselves as the "Battle Row Ladies Social and Athletic Club", they grow to over 100 woman warriors.
Hired out as strikebreakers in union disputes, and used as reserve fighters for the Gophers, they would be armed with clubs, bricks, and knives. They hold meetings at the Battle Row Saloon, and hide behind the designation of the weaker sex.
"They run the show"
Tammany Hall controls the politics, the business, and the crime. The face of Tammany comes and goes but their business doesn't change. They decide who is elected and how much crime will be perpetrated. They make deals with people in, both, high and low places. As high as the Belmonts and the Vanderbilts, and as low as the Gophers and the Dusters.
I am 16 years old. I go to school and I talk to my friends and I get good grades, but I like to think of my self as a kind of secret agent. I have an alter ego. I’m a visual vigilante who types away at her masterpiece in secret, behind closed doors.
I have a love for the process of filmmaking, and have been creating and filming my own stories since I was 4.
I had always flitted from one idea to the next, but when I came across the history of the Gophers, I was hooked. I have slept, breathed, eaten and dreamt of this story for over 3 years. I won’t stop until I can see it come alive.
I picture Battle Row as a series you can't wait to watch because of the complex plot lines, fascinating characters and dynamics, and over-arching aspect of it being historically accurate. I have 4 seasons mapped out, and have written the first season in novel form. Think
'Peaky Blinders' meets 'Titanic', Sexy, original, and a new take on the classic tale of love and war, Battle Row illustrates what happens when the man with nothing to lose falls for the girl with everything.
I am in the unique position to have a plethora. of music in the public domain from the 1900's that can be used in Battle Row.
I have access to a lot of very atmospheric and soulful music that my mother created for the band, Ain't Betty, and I think it works beautifully for Battle Row.
I imagine the show to use both the music of the era, and the music of today. An historically accurate soundtrack with songs like; "In My Merry OldsMobile", "A Bird In a Gilded Cage", "Meet Me In St Louis.", and "Give My Regards To Broadway.", could be juxtaposed with 90's to 2000's rock. Songs like; "I Hate Everything About You", "Cochise", "The Bridge Of Sighs", "In My Place", "Shake Me Down", "Guys Eyes", "Sitting Waiting Wishing", and "I Bleed".
